Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has involved widespread atrocities, including the documented rape of hundreds of women, the abduction of tens of thousands of children, mass civilian killings far from the front lines, and the displacement of millions both within Ukraine and across Europe. These war crimes were well-established early in the conflict. Yet despite this, commentator Charlie Kirk claimed in February 2023 that Vladimir Putin had shown “extraordinary restraint,” a statement that stands in stark contrast to the lived reality of Ukrainians who have endured constant airstrikes and terror for nearly four years.
